It has only been a few weeks since Mobile World Congress, the annual kickoff for the wireless industry, and we’re still following up with new clients we met there. In this edition of our newsletter, we explore a topic widely discussed at the show - the smartphone/tablet effect on mobile data - and its ultimate connection to the ComputaMaps geodata offering. We also want to highlight some improvements in how we’re communicating our product availability through our recently updated website and ongoing Twitter presence. ComputaMaps and the LTE Revolution

 

This year’s Mobile World Congress was busier than ever, with 67,000 attendees (according to the GSMA) and many discussions about HETNET, WIFI offloading strategies and offerings to improve customer experience. Most of all, the show was about how to monetize networks (3G and LTE) now that mobile data is driving average revenue per user (ARPU) for mobile operators around the world. This article explains the connection between mobile data uptake and its downstream impact on ComputaMaps geodata production.


What started as a trickle is now a tsunami of mobile data driven by the dramatic surge in smartphone penetration rates. Cisco’s Visual Networking Index (VNI) underscores the issue, with compound annual growth rates that range from 70% in Japan (an early mover to mobile data) to over 129% in the underserved Middle East and Africa for the period of 2010-2015.

Data from the Global Mobile Suppliers Association (GSA) as of March 13, 2012 corroborates the Cisco VNI findings. There are currently 57 commercial LTE networks operating in 32 countries, with a total of 242 commercial commitments in 81 countries for the technology. As a general rule, operators moving first to LTE were in regions with the highest mobile data usage or those carriers with limited technology options (i.e., CDMA) to address the demand. These operators were faced with the daunting challenge of offering more data over their networks; sometimes without being compensated for it because of uncapped data plans they had originally promoted to stimulate demand for mobile data. Most have learned their lessons with 3G data, and are capping their data plans - or throttling back speeds once a subscriber has reached their limit. Of course, we’re also seeing when one operator declares their LTE intentions, other competitors in the same country are not far behind for fear of losing the “high-speed, high-value LTE data customer”. The promise of spectral efficiency, improved performance and an all-IP infrastructure is making LTE a compelling technology choice for today’s operators.

With the “average” City Planner data set taking 3-4 weeks to produce, it is important for ComputaMaps to gauge product demand as it relates to the LTE rollouts around the world. We’ll typically see interest for a country’s main cities - as LTE is generally deployed in the main population areas first - from the operator and their vendors (including network equipment vendors and system integrators). City Planner 3D data is usually the product of choice for operators, as it is ideally suited for use in complex urban environments given its higher resolution and ability to deliver height values - key for accuracy using today’s advanced prediction models in most RF simulation tools.


In assessing our production schedule, we’ll determine the demand as it relates to countrywide spectrum announcements tied to LTE, commercially announced networks and vendor requests. Deciding which cities to produce as the priority is always an open question: one we have been answering for more than 15 years. Of course, having recent vintage geodata or “map data” on the shelf can make the difference in supplying multiple operators and vendors in the same country versus a single customer.


Technology upgrades such as LTE have provided a typical geodata renewal opportunity for suppliers to the telecoms industry, including ComputaMaps. Operators planning overlays or greenfield deployments of digital (2G), 3G and – now 4G – want to dimension and plan their networks as accurately as possible. This means building the most realistic world model through the latest geodata and calibrating new RF prediction models. To successfully supply this market, a geodata vendor needs to have the right resolution product, for the right area, at the right price. We see a bright future for our industry over the next few years as LTE deployments continue to expand. Our product offering will continue to evolve to meet LTE customer needs, wherever they are in the world.
